Why a normal mini fridge won't just plug in
Cars and houses run on completely different electricity. Wall outlets in North America supply 120-volt alternating current (AC); a vehicle's electrical system runs on roughly 12-volt direct current (DC). A standard mini fridge's compressor and controls are built for 120V AC, so its plug has nothing to connect to in your car — electrically or physically.
The 12V accessory socket (the old cigarette-lighter port) can't bridge that gap on its own. It only supplies 12V DC, and it's usually protected by a 10–15 amp fuse — a ceiling of roughly 120–180 watts. Even with an adapter, pulling a compressor fridge's startup surge through that circuit tends to blow the fuse. Running a 120V fridge off an inverter: sizing and risk
An inverter turns 12V DC into 120V AC. To pick one, you have to account for the compressor's inrush current — the brief surge when the motor kicks on, which can be several times its running wattage. A fridge that runs at 60–90 watts can momentarily demand a few hundred, so an inverter sized only to the running figure will overload and shut off at every cycle.
- Size for the surge, not the label. Choose an inverter whose continuous rating comfortably exceeds running watts and whose peak/surge rating covers startup — many small compressors want a few hundred watts of continuous headroom.
- Prefer pure sine wave. Cheap modified sine wave inverters can make compressor motors run hot, buzz, or fail early; pure sine wave mimics grid power.
- Mind the wiring. Anything above roughly 150 watts should be wired directly to the battery with correctly fused, appropriately gauged cable — not run through the lighter socket.
Even done right, an inverter is the least efficient path. You pay a conversion loss (commonly 10–15%) turning DC into AC, then the fridge's own compressor loss on top. The battery-drain problem nobody warns you about
The bigger risk isn't the inverter — it's what it does to your battery. A car's starter battery is an SLI (starting, lighting, ignition) battery, designed to deliver a huge burst for a few seconds and then be recharged by the alternator. It is not built to be slowly drained for hours, and doing so repeatedly shortens its life.
The math is unforgiving with the engine off. Current draw in amps is roughly watts divided by 12, plus inverter losses, so a 60-watt fridge pulls about 5–6 amps from a 12V battery. A typical car battery holds maybe 45–70 amp-hours, and you shouldn't drain a starter battery below about half its charge if you still want to crank the engine. That can leave only a few hours of runtime before the car won't start.

If you skip the inverter, two very different kinds of 12V appliance plug straight into the car. They are not interchangeable, and the gap between them is the single most important thing to understand before buying.
Thermoelectric (Peltier) coolers cool relative to the outside air, not to a set temperature.
- A Peltier element typically pulls the interior about 30–40°F (roughly 20°C) below ambient — so on a 90°F day it may only reach the 50s, and it can never freeze.
- They're cheap, light, and have few moving parts; many can also warm food by reversing the current.

- Secure it. An unrestrained cooler becomes a projectile in a crash or hard stop — strap or wedge it so it can't slide.
- Give it air. Both thermoelectric and compressor units dump heat from a vent; sealing them into a cargo cubby makes them work harder and can overheat them. Leave clearance around the vents.
