Buying guide
Built-in units are about installation and venting. The critical question is whether the model is truly front-venting and sized for your opening.
01
A true built-in vents heat from the front, so it can be enclosed in cabinetry or an island. A freestanding unit vents from the back and will overheat if boxed in — confirm the model is rated for built-in installation.
02
Built-ins are sized to a specific cabinet opening. Measure width, height, and depth including clearances, and follow the manufacturer’s cutout dimensions so the finished install is flush and safe.
03
If the unit goes in an outdoor kitchen, it must be specifically outdoor-rated for weather and wider temperatures. An indoor-only built-in should not be installed outside.
04
Check door-swing clearance against adjacent cabinets and confirm power and any water line reach the opening before installation day.
Questions
A built-in refrigerator vents from the front rather than the back, so it can be installed flush inside cabinetry or an island without overheating. Freestanding units vent from the back and are not designed to be fully enclosed.
Not safely enclosed. A freestanding fridge needs back and side clearance to exhaust heat, so boxing it into cabinetry can cause it to overheat and fail early. Choose a model rated for built-in installation instead.
Only if they are specifically outdoor-rated. Outdoor-rated built-ins tolerate weather and wider ambient temperatures; an indoor-only built-in should not be installed outside.
