Kegerator 101: draft beer at home, explained
A kegerator is a refrigerator built to store and pour a keg of beer on draft. A CO2 tank pressurizes the keg to push beer up a chilled beer line and out a faucet, while the cabinet keeps everything cold so each pour tastes fresh. The main decisions are full-size versus a compact or mini unit, whether it stands alone or is built in, and how many taps you want — and the biggest skill to learn is dialing in temperature and CO2 pressure to avoid a foamy pour.

The parts of a kegerator
Cabinet & compressor
An insulated refrigerated box that holds the keg cold — typically in the mid-30s°F. Full-size units fit a standard half-barrel; smaller ones take slim or mini kegs.
CO2 tank & regulator
Compressed CO2 pushes beer up and out and keeps it carbonated. The regulator sets serving pressure (commonly around 10–12 PSI for many ales; check the beer style).
Coupler
Connects the gas and beer lines to the keg. Different beers use different couplers — the "D system" is the most common for domestic kegs in the US.
Beer line & tower / faucet
Insulated tubing carries beer from the keg up through the tower to the tap. Line length and diameter affect how fast — and how foamy — the pour is.
Drip tray
Catches spills under the faucet. Not glamorous, but it saves your floor and your cabinet finish.
Full-size vs mini
Full-size
- Holds a standard half-barrel or multiple smaller kegs
- Best for frequent entertaining and home bars
- Freestanding or built-in; single or dual tap
- Needs floor space and a nearby outlet
Mini / countertop
- Takes slim, mini, or small pressurized kegs
- Fits a countertop, desk, or small home bar
- Lower up-front commitment to try draft at home
- Smaller keg selection and shorter pour capacity
Getting a clean pour
- Chill the keg fully before tapping — warm beer foams. Give a fresh keg time to reach serving temperature.
- Set the right pressure. Many ales serve well around 10–12 PSI; match the regulator to the beer style and your line setup.
- Mind the beer line. A line that is too short pours fast and foamy; correct length and diameter balance flow.
- Clean regularly. Rinse and sanitize lines and faucets between kegs to keep flavor clean and pours smooth.
Exact pressures and line lengths depend on the beer, altitude, and setup — treat the ranges above as starting points and follow your kegerator’s manual.

Frequently asked questions
What is a kegerator?
A kegerator is a refrigerator built to store and dispense a keg of beer on draft. A CO2 tank pressurizes the keg to push beer up through a beer line and out a faucet, while the cabinet keeps everything cold so each pour tastes fresh.
How long does beer last in a kegerator?
Properly refrigerated and pressurized with CO2, a keg of pasteurized beer commonly stays fresh for about 3 to 4 months, while non-pasteurized craft beer is often best within 6 to 8 weeks. Keeping the temperature steady and the CO2 connected is what preserves it.
Why is my draft beer so foamy?
Excess foam usually comes from beer that is too warm, serving pressure set too high, a beer line that is too short, or a dirty faucet. Chill the keg fully before tapping, dial the regulator to the style’s recommended PSI, and clean the lines regularly.
Do I need a full-size kegerator?
Not necessarily. Full-size kegerators hold a standard half-barrel and suit frequent entertaining, while mini and countertop units take slim or small pressurized kegs and fit a compact space. Choose based on how much you pour and where it will live.
