Refrigerator sizes & measurements, by type
A typical compact mini fridge measures about 17.8″ wide × 20″ tall × 17.8″ deep (1.7 cu ft), with most models between 10–23″ wide and 10.8–33″ tall. Beverage coolers, wine coolers, and freezers of the same capacity run taller and deeper. Every measurement on this page is the median of the real models we track that publish it — 4,355 models in all — so the numbers reflect what is actually on the market, not a spec-sheet ideal.

Typical dimensions by type
Each row shows the median external measurement for that type, with the middle 50% of models (25th–75th percentile) in parentheses. Capacity is the interior volume the maker advertises. Use the external width, height, and depth — not the cubic feet — when you check whether a model fits a space.

Medians and ranges are computed live from the 4,355 models we track that publish full dimensions, and update as the catalog changes. Any single model can fall outside its type’s range — always confirm against that product’s own spec sheet.
How to measure your space (so it actually fits)
- Measure the opening’s width, height, and depth with a tape — the niche, the counter gap, or the cabinet slot.
- Subtract clearance: about 1–2″ at the back and sides and 2–4″ on top for airflow, unless the model is rated for built-in (front-venting) installation.
- Leave room for the door swing — measure from the hinge side, and check whether the door is reversible if the space is tight.
- Compare the result to the fridge’s external dimensions, not its cubic-foot capacity. Two 3.2 cu ft fridges can have very different footprints.
How much do they weigh?
Weight is published far less often than dimensions, but among the models that do list it, a compact mini fridge’s median is about 78 lb. Larger beverage centers, wine coolers, and compressor freezers weigh more. Anything above roughly 50 lb is safer as a two-person lift, and worth checking against a shelf or wall-unit rating before you mount it.

Frequently asked questions
What are the standard dimensions of a mini fridge?
A small cube or compact mini fridge is commonly around 18–20 inches wide, 18–24 inches tall, and 18–20 inches deep, while a larger 3–4.5 cu ft model runs closer to 19–22 inches wide and 33–34 inches tall. Beverage and wine coolers of the same capacity tend to run a little taller and deeper. These are general typical ranges — the table above shows medians computed live from the real models we track, and any single model can differ, so check its spec sheet.
How much clearance does a refrigerator need?
Leave about 1–2 inches at the back and sides and 2–4 inches on top for airflow, unless the model is specifically rated for built-in or flush installation (those vent from the front). Also allow room for the door to swing fully open — measure from the hinge side. Without clearance a compressor fridge runs hotter, works harder, and uses more energy.
How do I measure a space for a fridge?
Measure the width, height, and depth of the opening, then subtract your clearance allowance from each. Compare the result to the fridge’s external dimensions (not its cubic-foot capacity). For a slot under a counter, the height and depth are usually the binding constraints; for a cabinet niche, width is.
How heavy is a mini fridge?
Most compact mini fridges weigh somewhere between about 25 and 60 pounds; larger beverage centers, wine coolers, and freezers with a compressor are heavier. Weight matters for shelving, wall units, and moving — a two-person lift is safest for anything above roughly 50 pounds.
