Why people lock a mini fridge

A lock turns a mini fridge from an open shelf into a controlled space. The reason you're locking it decides which lock you actually need — a peel-and-stick latch is fine for a curious toddler, but a shared dorm floor or a medication stash calls for a real keyed or keypad mechanism.

• Cable or padlock through a hasp — if your unit or a chest freezer has a hasp, a padlock or braided cable lock is the strongest choice. Stick-on hasps exist too, but an adhesive hasp is only as strong as its glue — treat it as a deterrent.

How to add a lock without damaging the unit

The golden rule: never drill into a mini fridge. Many compact models bond condenser tubing to the inside of the outer steel walls (a 'skin condenser' design), so a screw in the wrong place can puncture a refrigerant line, vent the coolant, and permanently kill the fridge — usually a repair that costs more than the unit. Adhesive and wrap-around mounting avoid all of that.

1. Pick aligned spots — a flat area on the door and a matching flat area on the cabinet, both on the front face so the strap pulls straight rather than at an angle.
2. Clean thoroughly — wipe both areas with isopropyl alcohol and let them dry; adhesive fails on any grease, dust, or condensation.
3. Work in a warm room — 3M-style adhesive bonds poorly on cold metal, so don't apply it to a running, chilled fridge. Let the surfaces reach roughly 70°F first (you can unplug and let it warm briefly, or apply before first cool-down).
4. Press and hold — press each pad firmly for at least 30 seconds to activate the bond.
5. Let it cure before use — wait 24 to 72 hours per the product's instructions before putting any load on the lock. Pulling on it early is the number-one reason these fail.
6. Test gently — once cured, give it a controlled tug to confirm the bond before you rely on it.

Locking a fridge for medication
